"Like an episode of Sesame Street scripted by Luis Buñuel and directed by Jacques Tati" (Jordan Mintzer, Variety), Rumba is archly humorous and full of physical wit. Fiona Gordon and Dominique Abel, longtime film partners, play two schoolteachers who love Latin dancing and the simple routine of their lives. They hit a would-be suicidal man on their way home one night. As a result, Fiona loses a leg and Dom his memory. Just as the rumba itself draws on older Cuban rhythms, this film carries on the comedic tradition of Chaplin and Jacques Tati, with a great deal owed to the clowning of physical theatre as well. Artfully choreographed and cunningly timed, Rumba's dance sequences, its deadpan humor and comic ironies lend a capriciousness that makes the simple world of the film seem magical.
