Synopsis
CHINA 2007 90 MINUTES DIRECTOR: ZOU YALIN
In Mandarin with English subtitles. For ages 8+
An eight year-old girl, Cui Ju, lives in a small, traditional Chinese community with her grandmother. She covets a new red jacket sold at the market, but they are too poor to buy it. A young film student comes to town to document the locals, and Cui Ju’s desire to wear the brilliant red jacket for a festival increases. The old woman doesn’t want a spoiled child, but she makes sacrifices so Cui Ju can have what she wants. The story unfolds as Cui Ju, her grandmother, and the villagers undergo simple but significant struggles. THE RED JACKET portrays this young girl’s journey with a remarkable air of authenticity, aided by the film’s charming cast of regional non-actors and the stunning setting of the cloud-draped mountain village in the Miao region of China.

An animated short film in which the modernization of Beijing is told through the eyes of a young boy playing with his grandmother.
Note to Audience:
The Childish Films program at the festival is truly international, and thus some films have foreign language dialogue with English subtitles. In our experience, young people do well with subtitles as they quickly grasp the language of cinema. If your child is not yet able to read, it may work best to read the subtitles aloud quietly in your seat so they may follow. The festival will not have live readers of subtitles, as the general consensus has been that “live dubbing” distracts from the experience of a foreign film—even at a young age. Enjoy the experience of foreign cinema with a young audience.
