Synopsis
Sita, 25, is a spirited young woman working to support her sick mother as a singer and prostitute in a local karaoke bar. She also has a little daughter living in the country. Always short of funds and bullied by her pimp, she convinces an elderly taciturn and withdrawn portrait photographer, Mr. Johan, to rent her a room. He begins to influence her life in a different way. In failing health, he is desperate to find an apprentice to carry on his work before he dies. The unlikely bond that develops between Sita and Mr. Johan is the basis of 46-year-old writer-director Nan Achnas's visually brilliant and poignant human drama about the profound effect one life and the fragile world of images can have on another. (Special Jury Prize, Karlovy Vary FF, 2008). She was among a vociferous group of 300 filmmakers in 2007 successfully protesting the Jakarta government state control over the film industry, resulting a strong boost to national production from critically acclaimed film directors.
