Dunya (Maryam Hassouni) and Desie (Eva van de Wijdeven) are 18-year-old best friends living in Amsterdam, but they come from different worlds. Never has that been more obvious than when Dunya’s parents order her to return to their native Morocco for her arranged marriage. That might be the end of their friendship, but when Dutch-as-can-be Desie gets some earth-shaking news of her own, she takes off for Casablanca to find her longtime pal, and maybe herself as well. Based on a popular Dutch TV series, this smart, winning coming-of-age story in the vein of Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants “positively sings with upbeat energy and humor.” – Variety.
A graduate of the Netherlands Academy of Film and Television, 39-year-old Dana Nechustan garnered worldwide acclaim for her student film, 1994’s Djinn. Her third feature, Dunya & Desie was the Netherlands’ submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won the Shooting Star award at the Berlin Film Festival for actress Maryam Hassouni.
In Dutch with English subtitles.
