This film takes on the daunting challenge of presenting a portrait of an historic figure who, invisible in his own time, is still virtually unknown in the contemporary world. Fooling both British and Nazi commanders in World War II, Spaniard Juan Pujol aka Alaric aka Garbo, was arguably the most successful spy working on behalf of the allied forces during the war. To present this study, writer/director Edmon Roch’s directorial debut ingeniously mixes every sort of footage imaginable, including expert interviews, public domain archival footage, and even scenes from fictional spy features. Both a captivating tale of espionage as well as a complex, provocative examination of documentary filmmaking, the film is sure to exhilarate every type of filmgoer.
