Closing night film selection at this year’s SXSW, Willie Nelson’s enduring influence and legacy as one of America’s best-loved singer-songwriters is celebrated in this affectionate documentary from Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton. Including interviews with Nelson’s wife, children, band mates, and actors Owen Wilson and Kris Kristofferson, among others, King of Luck reveals a man who will be remembered alongside Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Johnny Cash, and Ray Charles for his invaluable contribution to the musical landscape of America. A master storyteller, Willie Nelson keeps the legend of the old west alive through his songs, and King of Luck presents some of his hits with archival footage of Nelson’s past, both personal and performative.

Rising young Swedish star Alicia Vikander, 23, former ballerina as well as TV soaps actress, delivers a striking performance in her first movie role as a complex young woman seeking something ‘pure’ in her life.

This documentary explores two worlds that rarely collide: Tibetans and heavy-metal music. 

Three classic folktales from far-flung locations make the transition to the big screen in award-winning Dutch filmmaker Sander Francken’s Bardsongs.  Stories of garbage collectors, hardheaded farmers, and one student's pursuit of the greatest part of knowledge are all sung by local celebrities who have grown up with these tales. 

While the film benefits from a wealth of archival photographs and hard-to-come-by concert footage (both used to great effect), The Yellow Bittern’s most salient feature is Clancy’s own face, shown often in extreme close up.
